Okay people, it's PICKLE time!!!
The Ninja-3 are all at DK House, so them flying in early to Japan to acclimate their bodies and get a jump on life there is no problem. However, for the homestayers like me, Mia, and Sehyun, what do you think the problems could be?
I remember that Jeanette mentioned she'd be flying in at the appointed date of April 1st and thus has no pickles. Mia and Sehyun are flying in from Korea, which could or could not be pickly. I, however, am crashing at a hostel for a week and then have to somehow finagle my way to my homestay home.
What to do?
BTW, jet lag? SUCKS THE BIG TURKEY!!! I had no problems when flying over to China and Japan, but fly me back and BAM I am a turtle. I've been waking and sleeping erratically since I've been back so please expect little of what comes from me to make complete sense. *bows*
Oh yes! About gifts for your homestay family! IF you don't know yet, know this: BRING THEM PRESENTS!!!
It's not a like total expectation that you'll be getting them something, but it is a Japanese tradition of sorts. Remember all those phrases Marshall-sensei taught us and then Kawai-sensei refreshed?
Kore wa tsumaranai mono desu ga, douzo goenryo naku...
Use it!
If you need ideas for presents or plain ole forget until the last minute, airports have tons of random gifties that clear security like *SNAP*. Also, for all you DC people out there, D.C. itself is a fountain of cheap American paraphernalia. A couple of t-shirts, pretty pretty plates, or other random goodies will be nice. Be creative and don't forget!
I am actually just sitting here waiting for the post office to open so I can run down there and drop off a few bits of mail. Sad, but true. It's like 47F outside and I'm considering doing it in sandals because socks are just at the bottom of my "does Teresa care?" list.
Now!!! FUN FUN FUN NOTES!!!
To make my post just that schwidge longer and to have people truly enjoy reading it... *DRUM ROLL*.... *AIR GUITAR RIFF*... *ORCHESTRA STARTS TUNING UP*...

Your knack for creativity never fails to astound me and I am always impressed by your delicate combination of both information and fun that is compounded into not only each post but also each comment.

Energy super ball to the MAX! I tend to anticipate your posts and comments because they are continously amusing and insightful. If everybody shoots from the left, then you toss it from the right. Oodles of good times allllllll around!
JEANETTE
I have no clue, but for some reason or another, I probably spell your name wrong on a very consistent basis. *bows* Gomen! You have probably the most mature posts of us all and when in need to cut away fluff, I turn to you. You seem very on top of life and the ball and the circus tent and all that cotton candy good stuff. Props.
MIA
Honey, you realllllllllly don't post or comment enough for me to say anything. I do miss your pretty face though. And your pretty smile. *grins* Post more! Pronto! This is a meirei from above! Chop chop!
SEHYUN
Dude, you're like, not even registered here. But, no worries, we all in the same boat and I hope that you're doing okay. If you have problems at all while in Japan or even here, feel free to drop a line here. I feel like we are a pretty coofy spoofy group of people who are very dependable. *nod nod*
OOOOOOOOOOKAI~
I need to start hanging up my clothes from my trip to China. *shudders* 40 minutes until the post office opens! Yay!
*duck dances away*

haha, thanks teresa ^_^ it's okay, I sometimes misspell my name too; the two n's always trip me up. :-/
i didn't want to steal the thunder of your post but i did want to answer Jen's question about my banks:
JEN: I have Suntrust and Bank of America. From what I understand, B of Am's fees are about 2 or 3 dollars per withdrawal. For Suntrust, the person I spoke to said it was only the exchange rate. So if the rate is 0.0956 to a dollar then Suntrust charges you the .0whatever. But the Japanese banks will also charge us for using their ATMs so that's something to think about too.
so me coming in from korea has in fact become a bit pickly!
but first of all- Teresa, if you contact the liaison center about arriving in Japan earlier than april 1st then they said you can come to the office instead and a student will still take you to your homestay from there. They said 3pm for me but you might want to get in contact with them personally.
So I got in contact with them but I'm still not sure if I'm going to be arriving before april 1st or not. Sehyun wants to go a couple of days early (he found and is deciding on his own housing- homestay options- so he wants to check out the house and then the surrounding neighborhood and subway stuff) and I figured it would be good to get used to some of Japan before all the hustle and bustle of school (and the placement test of which.. I have not touched my Japanese books at all.... have you guys!?) but.... now I'm having second thoughts because it's a little worrisome that I would have all my luggage and some money and stuff at a questionably safe/unsafe hostel for a couple of days. And then.. what would I do for 3 days? I doubt mastering the route from my housing to school is going to take more than one go and then what? But I would like to arrive with someone rather than myself.. What are you guys going to do there before classes start?
Oye. Costs of buying presents for relatives and hostfamily really rack up. And then faxing fees and wire transfer fees and other fees... there are so many extra little costs here and there that add up... -_-
Haha I love your Japanese gift culture refresher!
Aaaand I wanted to respond to your comment to me. I think you meant to say...I love how you have a ridiculous amount of free time on your hands to check the blog religiously and comment on everything (sometimes multiple times at that). Haha but thanks! I just love reading everyone's posts and am glad there's so much activity here to keep me busy. There should be an eProps option here like Xanga (if any of you know what I'm talking about...)
Anyway...good luck with the jet lag! :/
And thanks Jeannette! I am definitely leaning towards Suntrust (also I feel that since my parents have an account with them, in case I need some extra help or something, they'll more easily be able to transfer funds to me and talk to the bank and all that). Yeah, hopefully the Japanese banks charge a reasonably cheap flat rate and not a percentage. So if that's the case I can just make bigger withdrawals less often.
MIA~
How do I contact the Overseas Liasion Office?
I haven't really looked through my uber packet yet and will be heading to Kinko's tomorrow. -_-"
I can understand your hesitations regarding coming early and all, but my main point for arriving before I'm expected is not only to give my body time to adjust but also to get myself acclimated to the potentials of Japanese life.
*shrug shrug*
it's what i do's
Also, Sehyun is really going to rent out a place on his own? Seriously? Huh... nifty. Tell him I wish him the best of luck in his endeavours!

off to watch moooooooovies

I just e-mailed them and they got back to me so.
Sehyun actually is choosing between different homestay options that he's found on his one. One is supposedly only 10 minutes away from Sophia...
Teresa what is your host family like??
Matsumoto family of THREE
The dad is 58, mom is 53, and they have a 14 yo daughter. I don't know is she's Chu-2 or Chu-3, but either way, she's the only child. It's a 40 min train ride over. They live in Nerima-ku.
How about yours?
man at least yours is a normal family.. haha I don't know what to expect from mine! I just keep on picturing the moment I put a check next to "okay with seniors"...
Tohara family of 4-
dad is 71, mom is 64, son is 35, daughter/daughter-in-law? is 34.
haha see what I mean? they say i have to go to myougadani station? and it's 40 minutes for me too. I'm nervous! and I don't know what to get them!
awww...
your family sounds FUN compared to mine. i actually intend to go out and enjoy the Tokyo nightlife, so i can't truly predict if my family would okay that or not. i checked the elderly box too. at least you'll be given an opp to learn about japan's past and how the elderly are effecting today's society given that births in japan have decreased to about 1 per family.
hehehe. invite me over sometime! i'll do the same of course. but, we'll need our family's approval and all, though i doubt they'd really mind.
are you still coming early or no? i sent them the e-mail like you did and they got back to me with the 3pm thing too. i can probably handle shifting my luggage to sophia from the hostel. it's not too far, i think.
where will you be staying?
i don't know how much clothing to pack. i really want to bring my rainboots with the rainy season and all, but *shrug* they're super heavy.
ahhhhhhhh...
i need to go shopping for my family soon. bah!
OH WOW!!!
I JUST FOUND OUT SOMETHING SPECTACULAR!!!
I found my host family ONLINE. Apparently they are veterans at this whole hosting a student thing!!!
check it ooooout~
http://nihonliz.livejournal.com/
This girl wrote down the address, and me's being the stalker that I am found the family! Weird!
What a great post! =D Thanks for all the compliments XD Sorry I've been kind of MIA lately, Nick has come to visit me for spring break, so we've been here and there and everywhere, except Internetland.
It sounds like you homestay kids have your fair share of complications as well.. But don't forget.. you'll be experiencing a side of the Japanese lifestyle that you'll likely never have another opportunity to experience!
As for the elderly hosts.. I would say that any older family that wants to host American college kids must be at least somewhat cool =) I think it just must say something about their personalities! They wouldn't offer to host people if they didn't enjoy it, ne?
In other news... where the heck is my COE!! I just emailed Sophia with the same question, slightly more politely worded.
Also, who is excited about stocking up their rooms with cheap goodies from the 100 yen stores? =)
Hell yeah, I racked up some eProps in my day, too...
Hahaaaaaa, Teresa, that large Christmas photo on that page is hilarious, is it not...?
