Hey all,
So tomorrow I'm going to put in the papers for my visa. I've already faxed all the housing and airport pickup stuff to DK and Sophia but I totally forgot about the language bit (bad sign) until I read Teresa's post. So thanks T for reminding me, haha.
Oh and Mia I just linked your blog to the destination: Asia website. It was so completely helpful! It makes me really excited to see all of the blog posts everyone's going to have in the future, yay :)
Ok, so I'll post tomorrow and tell you all how it went. BTDubs, I'm also going to open a CitiBank account tomorrow. When I went to Bank of America to transfer my funds for DK my dad and I asked the lady who was helping us about banks in Japan. She said I could use my B of Am debit card with any ATM but there would be a fee. She then advised to get the CitiBank account as those ATM fees will add up. Think about it: Say I withdraw money once a week, that's 2 or 3 dollars every time. Hmm, roughly 16 weeks, times 2 or 3 dollars. It may not seem like a lot but I think going to an ATM once a week is a conservative estimate.
That's my two cents. I'll be posting soon!

I'm going up today, too, woooooooooooo (it's so early right now...!!!!!!!!)
Egads! Why on earth are you up so early?!
Then again, I was up then too...
Jeanette!!! Best of luck with the visa getting business! Could you please let me know how's the parking in the area and whether or not a proxy can be sent to obtain said visa for me? Muchos ARIGATOU mi amiga~ ^^
About the whole banking thing, I don't really like to deal with ATMs and all that, but in order to avoid the whole situation altogether I'm going to open up a bank account over there and have my parents wire transfer money into it so that I can avoid some trouble.
Best of luck today!!!
BTW, how many kanji did you put down? I still don't know how many to say I "studied."
I'm up early too! But not *that* early, you kids is crazy. I guess Greg is working hard as usual =)
Gooood luuuuck vissaaaaa!! I hope it goes well! And Teresa, you might wanna double check the DC site and see if you can mail yours in like I'm gonna be able to at Chicago's.
I think I overshot and said.. 500~600 kanji? Lol. I think it doesn't matter too much, if you guys are filling out the same thing I am, it's just to give them an estimate of how many kids will be doing the intensive program.
DK House people, I'm trying to decide on bedding cause I need to email DK back.. I already found a Japanese website where you can buy bedding for like $75.. so I don't really like the thought of just renting it from DK for $100... but then again, do I wanna have to go out and buy bedding when we get there? I guess there's no real reason not to except SEVERE EXHAUSTION/no clue where I'm going.... but then what to do with it afterwards.. hrmmmm, DK why you gotta make things so difficult?
Dude, hygeine first!
Because it is the bedding on which you will be resting upon for at least half a year, I feel that 75 dollars is a worthy investment even if you toss it or give it away afterwards.
Think of it this way, an $800 mattress lasts a supposed 10 years in America (at best). That's $80 a year. $75 for your own for half a year may seem a bit steep but it's not if it's really worth it to have some reliable bedding of your choice.
Just my 2 cents.
Sheesh, because I was up so early today I ended up heading to Walmart and Harris Teeter's at like 8am. -_-" Ridikulous!!! Oh well, at least my chores for the day are done. All I have is my interview at 2pm and then I am free to bum around alll day loooong.
Haha...! I saw Jeanette in DC today at the embassy after a 3 hour car ride with my dad. Whaaaaaat a treat!
You can park on a side street... my dad and I got good spots both visits to the embassy that required basically crossing the street and walking 50 feet to the destination. One trip was for turning in my stuff, and the other trip was for giving them a USPS Express envelope so that they can send me my visa instead of me having to drive allll the way back up to DC. That being said, Teresa, I think that you CAN have someone get it for you because I think I saw a spot on a piece of paper that could be signed by a "representative" (my word, not their... but I felt like it still needed quotes). Call them!
I wrote three-hundred fiftyyyyy... as a 202 graduate. I felt like I dumped my 310 kanji, so I only gave myself a 33 kanji handicap (is handicap the right word? I mean, for what I wrote, not for the current state of my Japanese...)
And wow, I'm down for buying bedding $25 cheaper and then donating it to a homeless person!
Did I say I was doing intensive? 'Cause I am... my main goal is to become semi-confident in my speech, regardless of how terrible it is! (I mean, seriously, my English speaking is preeeetttttyyyy shaky most of the time... fast and non-articulate... I just need to get my Japanese to that speed so I can fumble in my usual manner instead of a slow, unintelligible manner)
OMG GUYS I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU ALL WENT THURSDAY TOO. THAT'S WHEN DAN AND I WENT. OMG. I WAS THERE A BIT BEFORE 11 I THINK. SO NOT COOL. I WISH I HAD RUN INTO YOU ALL TOO. BOOOOOO I'M SO UPSET.
Oh yeah, I put 500 I think too.
Ooh bedding. Yeah I've been wondering about that. So we have to tell them if we don't want theirs? I should go look at that paper again. I think we should definitely just buy some there. I'm pretty sure Tokyu Hands would have some, besides that site. But yeah, seems like a much better deal. And maybe it'll be really cute and I'll bring it home to...not fit on my bed. Let's just do it...exhausted/clueless or not! First challenge desu! And yeah, Teresa's good point.
Yes, go intensive.
