Ah! Packing!

So I've been packing and it's all adding up quicker than I thought... :/
I made a packing list and everything but deciding what clothes to bring is the hardest I think. I'm trying to cover different occasions and weather and whatnot. How many days/weeks' worth of clothing is everyone bringing? And has anyone thought of anything crucial that may otherwise be overlooked?

Also, I know we talked about it earlier briefly, but luggage...how much? I think I'll be bringing a large rolly suitcase plus a small one to check in, and I'll be carrying on a backpack and just keeping my laptop inside my backpack instead of a whole other carrying case. I'm worried I'm being excessive though.
And how much of stuff are you all planning to bring vs. buying there? Stuff like toiletries and things...I keep wavering on what to do.
Oh, I'm so indecisive.
Lastly, I just wanted to remind you all to not pack any wrapped gifts in your carryon. And be mindful of the liquid carrying guidelines and all that.

Oh, to the other 2 ninjas...I added a comment to the last post but I guess I'll just throw it in here too. When should I be expecting you on Monday? I just want to make sure I'll be all packed by then and to set up the basement for fun times and to plan out meals and when I need to go to the airport/be home. So just let me know! Thanks!

hmm...
i'll be carrying/traveling with 4 bits of luggage. 1 large 30" suitcase + 1 large duffel (can be put on top of wheelie suitcase) + 1 backpack + 1 purse. i have so much crap it's ridiculous. i highly doubt i'll be buying clothes there so i'm bringing all the crap i usually wear when i go out when it's warm/hot. because winter is quickly fading into spring, i debated over the need for a winter jacket.

do we really need one? i feel like dan would know since he's there and all.

as for toiletries, i'm bringing mainly facewash and other face-related goods that i can only get in america. i'm allergic to a bunch of stuff and trying to find something that works for my skin in japan is just asking for it. also, because of the ridiculous humidity over there, i'm packing my own emergency hair goop stuff. i'm also packing me own toothbrush, paste, and floss. shampoo, soap, and mouthwash aka any other liquidy stuff will be bought in japan. that's what i did for china and it ended up saving me like 10lb in stuff i had to haul around.

don't forget: chargers for all your electronic goods (incl. MP3 or camera) *i left mine in america when i went to china and was scrooged*, medicines like for allergies *allergy season is coming up, pack some visine or alavert if you're the type that needs it, i am*, pictures of your family *they will come in handy*, and anything else you think you will need and will be unable to get in japan.

my biggest issue right now is shoes. in japan, you have to like take off your shoes/change them whenever you enter a building. should i pack only the shoes i need/think are uber cute or pack ONLY what i need and buy some in japan?

my list grows longer daily, it's kind of sick, but better prepared than not.

i can't think of anything else.

geh, i hate this. packing = nonsense.

What Dan's been telling me about weather is that he may go out in like shorts and a long-sleeve pullover for mornings and evenings which are a bit cooler. It's been raining a bunch so an umbrella is good to bring or buy there. But otherwise, I don't hink you need a heavy jacket at all. I'm just bringing zip-up hoodie/long sleeve shirts to get me by the early part of when we're there (and for school classrooms/restaurants etc) because I get cold pretty easily.

Okie okie, thanks for the info...very good to know! And yeah, I think I will bring travel-sized toiletries and buy more as the need arises, because man, liquids way so much...

Shoes...what I've been thinking is my Puma casual sneakers, running shoes for days with a lot of walking or if I actually do go running, flipflops to wear on a daily basis, a pair of ballet flats (probably will wear these for flights at least because they're easy to slip on/off), and a pair of heels for a somewhat nicer occasion. I may also pack a crappier pair of flipflops to wear around the dorm/in the shower, but I may just use the flipflops I'm bringing, or buy a pair there. Oh wow, that really does add up. I think you really need to see how much space you have for them...cute shoes are probably a must for you, but I'm also sure Japan has a plethora of cute shoes...

Weigh! Liquids WEIGH so much. I completely cringed when I saw I used 'way'. Looks like I'm losing my English skills along with the Japanese... XD

I've bought so many cute shoes over last semester and break.... I feel they are...necessary... lol. Every time my dad sees me buying shoes or sees them all lined up he just shakes his head and says something like "I never would've guessed.. never would've thought in a million years that you would love shoes." Hahaha.. I guess I just wasn't that type of kid..

As for the coatwear, I think I'll bring a jacket like Jen was talking about and then maybe look for something cute over there, like a short trenchcoat type rain jacket, you know what I'm saying? Since it's apparently going to rain all the time because that's what Japan does >_<

I third the motion for bringing only travel size toiletries and shopping for the rest, especially since we're going to be there long enough that we'd probably have to do it at some point anyway and they do weigh a lot.

As for going in and out of houses Teresa.. hrm... I'm not sure how many people's houses we're going to be invited in besides our own, hehe, so I wouldn't base your shoe decisions on that. My shoe decisions will be based on what else I'm willing to sacrifice for my shoes.... I wonder if I can get copies of Genki II and Intermediate Japanese over there.. hahaa..

Crap, I forgot the important part.

Jen, I am scheduled to arrive at Dulles International Airport at 11:55 of the daylight hours, just before the passing of noontime, though we shall see if such an itinerary holds fast in the wake of the ever unpredictable whims of sky travel.

Arrgg! I'm on the cod picking out classes, and I just want to say they've designed an impossible set of requirements with the Japanese major >_< They have their little list of what your courses might look like when you get it all said and done, and there are 5 JAPN 400 level classes on there... Let's see here.. sensei pretty much won't let you into a 400 level class until you've completed 302, so that means you've got your fourth year to get 5 of those classes in, which isn't impossible but... oh wait, they only offer one each semester unless you do independent study! Maybe I should email heldt-sensei.. I'd like to take chinese or korean to fill those extra requirements but I'm not sure I can go back to/have room in my schedule to take a class 5 times a week.... graah!

ack, cod, GROSS~

how are we supposed to register anyways? seriously? and the japanese language and literature major is pretty ridiculous. it's almost as if they want us to not make it. only wilson-sensei teaches 400-level, right? i feel like because the major is becoming more popular, more courses or substitute courses should be available to us.

oooooh yeah! natalie! are you going to bring your copy of eyewitness travel? cuz if you are, i won't bring mine and vice versa. less weight to lug about.

also, BRING YOUR IJ BOOKS! the text book from j300 is apparently the same one used over there. that's what jen mentioned to me some time ago and my memory is just crazy like that.

ooooh yeah! america's best dance crew? TOTALLY UNFAIR! i feel like the show producers were pushing for east coast vs west coast and that's why kabba modern lost out. status quo is good, but i feel like with the energies they bring and the injuries they've accumulated, they're pulling on the heartstrings of the judges rather than working on talent. bah! at least the battle between jabba and kabba was right fierce.

Haha I always get really excited with the new COD comes out actually...

The DEALC or whatever it's acronym is now department needs more funding and staffing so we can get more courses, I definitely agree! There's just not enough options, and when the only 400 level JAPN classes are once a week for 2 and a half hours it kind of puts a big kink in your scheduling..

Now on to the dancing! As for East vs West.. it was the fan votes exclusively that put Status Quo ahead and Kaba and Jabba in the bottom two last night, so I don't think you can blame the producers for that.. And as much as I enjoyed Kaba's performances, they really couldn't stack up against the Jabbas, especially with their crraazy performance last night.

I am worried for Jabbas in the final two though.. I feel like their performance against Kaba was waaaay better than their final one.. It didn't seem like it had any energy, I thought they would've done more with having their own music and all. Maybe I'm just used to how they've been challenged with high energy performances and this one was more technical or whatever cause that's their true style..

Status Quo.. they do some crazy tricks and stuff but.. I thought their performance last week definitely shouldn't have put them in the top.. I wasn't really that impressed and it seemed sloppy. Their dancing never seems tight enough to me. And what was with their first performance last night? I felt like they were just imitating all the stuff that Jabbas do! I couldn't believe it! I'm worried that since they went all out with the costumes and props and stunts for the last dance that they're gonna pull ahead... but if you look at it overall, I don't think there's any question that Jabbas are the better group.

Oh, and I haven't started filling suitcases yet to see how much room I'm gonna have.. but I'll let you know if my Japan book happens to fit perfectly and is in no danger of being removed from my packing list so that maybe you won't need to bring yours =)

COD!?!?? Crap.

Jen, I wasn't planning to arrive until the afternoon... I'll get exact times later. Looks like I won't be crashing into your pick-up Natalie time.

And, that's PRECISELY why I couldn't do the Japanese major and had to do AMELC. Er, EAST. Whatever.
